The Visitor Center at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum creates a welcoming threshold to 691 acres of trails, wetlands, and historic gardens. A simple steel structure wrapped in full-height glass, the building offers immersive views into the arboretum’s renowned “museum of trees,” including Olmsted’s Oak Park. Warm maple ceilings and oak millwork complement the landscape and house exhibits focused on trees and local ecology.

Its restrained form, minimalist detailing, and integrated site strategy allow the building to sit quietly within the historic context of the 1880s Manor House and surrounding grounds. Entrances on three sides open directly to the landscape, while deep roof overhangs shade the glass walls—reducing heat gain, creating generous outdoor spaces, and supporting overall energy performance. A rooftop photovoltaic array supplies roughly 20 percent of the building’s energy use.

Working closely with Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects, the project team preserved existing canopy and critical root zones while upgrading parking, lighting, accessibility, and stormwater systems. Excavation for the basement was carefully coordinated to protect mature trees, ensuring a light touch on the site while creating an engaging experience for visitors of all ages and abilities.
